3-4 million China CDMA users in `02?

China is a key market for Qualcomm. They need to succeed there to make a dent in global CDMA penetration. But the problem is that most users there are already using GSM phones and if they switch to CDMA they’ll have to get a new number. Chinese CDMA carrier, China Unicom, is marketing CDMA to high end users, who probably cherish their existing mobile numbers. Until Unicom can show real advantages to switching over, they are going to have a tough time. That goes double for Qualcomm.
