Are Video Games Speech?
from the redeeming-values dept
There have been a number of articles about the recent court case that said that video games are not protected by the First Amendment since they’re not speech – and serve no larger social purpose. Instead of just linking to one of the articles about the case, here’s an article from Salon that takes a deeper look to try to point out where video games do have some sort of redeeming social value as a form of artistic expression. An interesting read. Update: Somewhat related to this is news of a bill being introduced in Congress to make it a criminal offense to sell violent video games to minors. Again, this seems a bit extreme.
