Microsoft Introduces Its Own DRM Technology
from the blah-blah-blah dept
Not surprisingly (if you’ve followed Microsoft’s moves in this space), Microsoft is now trying to introduce a new technology for copy protecting digital content. The idea is to add an extra layer that would indicate just what can (or cannot) be done with any particular content. In other words, the producer of a CD could allow tracks to be copied to a computer, but not burnt to another CD. While this sounds a bit more advanced than previous DRM technologies, it will still only succeed in hurting fair use rights. Real “pirates” will figure out how to get around this technology (if they haven’t already) and it will just be your every day user who wants to make a compilation CD of his or her favorite songs that gets screwed.
