SBC Looking At DirecTV?

from the a-triple-play dept

When the EchoStar/Hughes merger fell apart, many people considered it a done deal that Ruper Murdoch and News Corp. would finally end up with DirecTV instead. Now, however, a few other players are making noises that they might be interested in owning the satellite TV play. The latest rumor making the rounds is that SBC is looking into what it would take to own DirecTV. This would mean (if it went through) that SBC would offer phone, TV, and internet access all via the same company – being the first major telecom company to do so. Some cable companies already offer this using voice-over-broadband, but having one of the bells have this “triple play” would be quite a big deal. It would certainly push the other, remaining, baby bells to start looking for more ways that they can get into the TV business as well.
