Hollywood Bullying Colleges About File Sharing

from the intimidation-as-a-tactic dept

No surprise here, but the movie studios have apparently hired a company named MediaForce to send threatening cease-and-desist letters to universities where they find students sharing movies online. However, it appears that they’re not necessarily following the proper legal procedures, and often are overstepping their bounds. Furthermore, despite giving a contact name and phone number, they don’t respond to any calls from the universities. Instead, they just keep threatening with more cease-and-desist letters. Wouldn’t it be amazing if Hollywood spent 1/10 as much as they’re spending on lawyers these days offering people a simple, useful, file sharing service?
