That Same Old Story About Anti-Spam Laws

from the not-doing-much dept

So many politicians are talking up their anti-spam laws, but not much is likely to happen. Declan McCullough, over at News.com take a look back at 1997 when folks in Congress were all complaining about the threats of spam and the FTC was holding hearings. It all sounds very much like today… and nothing got done. Meanwhile the LA Times has an article quoting lots of people (including myself) explaining why the new California spam laws are unlikely to help at all. Spam is a nice topic for politicians that gets them a lot of press, and makes it look like they’re solving problems “for the people”. However, when it comes down to it, the laws they’re working on all have lots of problems and will do little (if anything) to solve the underlying problems that lead to spam.
