The Internet As The Fifth Estate?
from the artificial-designations dept
There’s a constant (and, it seems, incredibly boring) debate about “blogs vs. journalism” – which seems sort of pointless to me. It’s not as if this is a zero sum game where there’s room for only one. The two work off of each other, and often the lines are quite blurry between them. Trying to set up a specific “us vs. them” dichotomy is only an attempt (by everyone who bothers) to get more publicity. Still, I found it interesting to find an editorial in a large newspaper suggesting that the internet has become “the fifth estate.” It’s not often you see the mainstream press admitting that anyone outside of themselves has a place in their world at all.
