A student who hacked into school computers to change his own grades has been caught. The student has been suspended and they’re debating whether or not to file charges against him. This seems like such a cliche hack. The student also apparently tried to delete over a thousand files on the computer system as school officials were monitoring them and trying to track down the hacker. So, this week we have stories about the stereotypical teenager Sasser hacker and a kid who changed grades in the school computer. What other stereotypical hack is missing to completely drive home the nerdy teenaged hacker stereotype? Update: Whoops. Looks like this kid isn’t the only one. It’s end-of-the-school-year time, which means end-of-the-school-year hacking to some. More students have been arrested in Detroit for trying to hack their grades.

How about someone who hacks into a video game company, only to find he’s actually hacked into NORAD and inadvertently started a global thermonuclear war?

This is another sad example of the sad state of IT in our public schools. First one school gets busted by the FBI because the school allowed kids to install file sharing software on their machines. Next, another school leaves their system wide open and available for a CHILD with no more than what… a fourth grade education, to hack into? Both instances are not a problem with the children. But they do illustrate a serious issue with the lack of security on school owned networks here in the US.

ok, so one will need to train the already overloaded school teachers with the fine points of computer security. Never mind that they don’t get enough money for chalk to begin with. Won’t citizens start complaining about “pork barrell politics”, how we spend more per capita on student than any other country, etc.?
