Google To Rehash Every Dot Com Boom Idea

from the so-many-announcements... dept

Google sure does know how to bunch up those announcements. In the last month and a half (not even), they’ve announced Gmail, an IPO, and their new version of Blogger. Today, though, they made it clear that they intend to be the second coming of nearly every boom-time dot com idea. First they announced that they want to be Doubleclick, and now they’ve announced that they want to be eGroups. eGroups, of course, is now YahooGroups, and is pretty popular as a place to maintain mailing lists. While some in the blogging community insist that mailings lists are pointless in an age of blogs, plenty of people still find them quite useful. What’s interesting, though, is that Google already has “Google Groups” – which is what they got when they bought Deja’s Usenet archives and then expanded them (massively). With this new Groups2 offering, Google apparently intends to somehow merge it into the original Google Groups, making the Usenet postings and mailings lists connected in one big interface – all searchable by Google, and all sporting lovely Google ads (now… with pictures!).

The Google personal portal can’t be far behind.

Your own Internet portal page with personally selected news articles, local weather, horoscope, etc., along with ads, of course, based on your location and profile.

Some other Yahoo features they could introduce:

  • Dating service using Google search technology to find your mate
  • Photo albums (with ads based on the text accompanying your photos)
  • Personal Calendar (“Meeting for lunch in Cleveland? Here’s a few restaurants you might want to consider…”)
