Telemarketers Now Free To Call One Of The Last Phoneless Communities In The US

from the phew dept

Back in December, we wrote about the rural community in Louisiana that still didn’t have phone service, though BellSouth was in the process of wiring them up, at a cost of nearly $50,000 per customer. That article also noted that people could get access via analog “bag phone” mobile phones, but just in a few specific spots. Well, it turns out the analog phone service gets turned off today… but, BellSouth has completed the wiring, giving the residents phone access. Of course, one of them reports that her first phone call was from a telemarketer (think BellSouth is trying to recoup the $50k by selling phone numbers already?). Perhaps it’s time to introduce the folks in Mink, Louisiana to the national Do Not Call list.
