Chinese Websites Expected To Register With The Government

from the authenticate-your-.com dept

While the government in Ukraine eventually decided it was better off not forcing all websites to register with the government, it appears there’s no such luck in China, where every Chinese website is supposed to register with the government by the end of May, which is, well, about now. Each website is supposed to get a registration number, which should create quite a bureaucratic nightmare. The Chinese government, of course, is doing this to help keep their attempt at tightly controlling use of the internet in the country, which has had mixed success so far. It’s unclear how many sites have actually gone through the process, but you can bet that China will use this rule to shut down just about any site they don’t like — either by catching them for not registering, or by using the registration info to put pressure on the owners of such sites.
