Online Photo Battle Participants Begin Next Steps

from the a-little-positioning,-please... dept

The online photo space has been quite busy lately. Two of the bigger deals, of course, were when Yahoo bought Flickr and HP bought Snapfish in March. While we’re expecting a lot of changes in the overall space, both of those companies are starting out by making some small adjustments, which could probably be seen as a little bit of posturing before any real battles commence. HP is basically firing a shot at Shutterfly and Kodakgallery (previously Ofoto) by dropping the price of purchasing a print to $0.12 — less than half of the other two players. Meanwhile, Yahoo, true to its apparent belief that photos were meant to be seen online, rather than on paper, has announced a service that will let users more easily share photos by email. Yahoo will host the photos, and allow users to easily put up to 300 thumbnails into an email. In other words, instead of pointing someone to an online photo gallery, you’ll be able to put that gallery directly into an email — without overwhelming everyone with a huge email. Again, neither move is earth shattering, but say a lot about the directions the online photo battle will head over the next few months.
