Massachusetts Gets Florida Spammer To Pay

from the good-work dept

Massachusetts Attorney General Thomas F. Reilly has convinced a Florida spammer to pay $25,000 and change his spamming ways for violating CAN SPAM. While this is being hailed as a victory for CAN SPAM, it still raises a lot of questions. First, you have to wonder if the guy is really going to change his ways. If you listen to what spammers claim they’re making on a daily basis, a $25,000 hit isn’t a huge deal. It’s an expense, but not enough to make you really worry. Second, it’s not like these lawsuits have slowed spam down very much. As the article points out, since individuals can’t sue under CAN SPAM, we’re totally relying on governments to make the cases for us — and so far they’ve been pretty slow.
