Dutch ISPs Don't Have To Hand Over Info To Entertainment Industry

from the privacy-violations dept

We’ve written a few times about an ongoing court case in the Netherlands focusing on the privacy issues associated with collecting IP addresses and using them to track down people accused of file sharing. As always, the Constitutional Code blog is on top of the case, noting that the court has ruled that ISPs don’t have to hand over info, and that collecting such info is a violation of privacy laws — though, there are a few caveats. The situation seems fairly specific to this case, where the entertainment industry used an American firm to collect the IP addresses. However, it is still nice to see that ISPs shouldn’t just be forced to cough up user info without more substantial evidence.
