On Second Thought: New Deadline For E911 Service May Be Never

from the letting-it-slide dept

The FCC’s history of repeatedly backing down on E911 related deadlines is pretty well documented by this point — as is the double standard used between mobile E911 and VoIP E911. Of course, a big part of the issue with mobile E911 was that money collected as part of a tax for E911 systems and sent to police for the purpose of upgrading their equipment, instead went to things like winter boots and ballpoint pens. A new Congressional report is looking into the matter and has found that some areas may simply never get around to implementing E911 service, though tax money was still collected in those regions for E911. I’m sure we all feel much safer now. Still, apparently the lesson in all of this is to feel free to ignore FCC deadlines.
