So, Wait, Is .xxx Good Or Bad For Kids?

from the you've-got-us-all-mixed-up-now dept

It would appear that we now have two different groups of politicians, both of whom are trying to appear more “protective of our children” tossing around a political football concerning the .xxx top-level domain. Back in December, the US administration stepped in and pressured ICANN not to approve .xxx for adult sites, after conservative and religious groups protested such a red-light district online as “legitimizing” such content — and, of course, this was bad for the cause of “protecting our children.” Meanwhile, earlier this month, some US Senators started pushing a bill that would force the creation of such a domain and require all adult content sites to reside there. Again, this was put forth as a way of “protecting our children.” So, for those of you who expect the government to parent your children for you, .xxx is either the best thing or the worst thing for protecting your kids. Meanwhile, ICANN, who is supposed to be making this decision on its own and who is also supposed to be separate from the US government, had planned to meet on this again this week, with approval of .xxx expected. Except… US officials have again stepped in to force ICANN to hold off, thus showing that ICANN doesn’t seem to have quite the independence it claims to have. As the discussion on this continues, expect to hear over and over again the importance of protecting our children — but who protects our children from ridiculous political battles?

Wouldn't this help more than hurt?

I think that this would make it a lot easier to block out pornographic websites. Couldn’t schools and parents that don’t want their childerent visiting xxx sites just block access to all sites with .xxx domains?

Pornography is a big part of the internet, and if it is quarantined off from the rest of the net by the .xxx domain, I think that it makes it much more managable.

Pornographic websites sometimes have misleading domain names that can lead childeren to them. With the .xxx domain, you would have no question on the type of website you are visiting.

Mike says:

Re: There's just one little problem.

Exactly. Not only that, but there’s also the issue of getting US SITES to obey the law. For example, look at all the spam laws they’re trying to put into play. Yet my inbox still fills up with spam every day. I have a feeling that there will still be adult sites that will refuse to comply… and with the vast number of sex sites out there, the government is going to have a rough time trying to catch all the non-compliants.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: Re:

Everyone knows that there is no way that every pair of boobs is going to be safely behind a .xxx if this happens.

So the ‘majority’ of porn is going to be easy to block if we have a .xxx? Well the majority of porn is already easy to block, if you give half a damn about it anyways. That’s what parental controls and filters are for.

‘ogod, the internet is making me a bad parent. Make it stop without me having to do anything!’

Lee says:

Re: I dont think they will go that far...

“They” can’t even decide if the .xxx is a good or bad thing. Now “they” will be left to decide what does anddoes not belong on an .xxx website???

As difficult as it seems to be for some people, I still argue that it should be up to the individual where and to what he/she wants to pull up on the computer.

I’d prefer the government fix the damn potholes on the highways I have to drive on.

Anonymous Coward says:

Re: I dont think they will go that far...

Right, but who decides what is of a sexual nature? A lot of people feel that because we let women walk around with their hair and skin exposed that they are naked.

There are still a lot of people that feel that artistic nudes should be banned.

So, I ask again, whose standards are we going to go by?

I have no problem with moving all porn to .xxx, but there has to be a standard before it is implemented. I am all for protecting children, but there is an extent that parents need to take absolute responsibility with their offspring. I have children too, but this is not going to correct their behavior. I am the one that corrects their behavior. If I tell my children not to go to a particular site, they do not go… This is because they both respect and fear the concequences of their actions. I keep logs of every site they go to on a snort server that I have on my home network. This is how I keep track.

Wolfger (profile) says:

Re: I dont think they will go that far...

they will not make all sites with any form of nudity move to the xxx domain, just the sites that show nudity in a sexual nature

So… a picture of my neighbor, the nudist, getting a suntan. Sexual in nature, or not? Any nudist will tell you there’s nothing sexual about it. Any “HNG” on the net will surely be jacking off to it, though.

Sleeps says:

Efficient?

Many say that creating *.xxx domains might not be very efficient as all pr0n web sites cannot be forced to move to .xxx domain. But I don’t see a drawback of creating this domain. Even if 10% of all sites transfer to .xxx, that means that 10% of the sites can be blocked (if needed by a school, parent…).

I'm not crazy, and neither am I says:

How many times has someone gone to dicks.com and not seen the sporting goods store?

I think this is best to help prevent ACCIDENTAL veiws on porn sites. If a person, kid or adult, wants to find porn, they can do it. Easily. So it may be out of the range of possibility to get ALL of the porn sites out, all you need to get out are the ones that have names close to the names of “legitimate” sites.

Just an Opinion Guy says:

Re: We have .gov, .biz, .edu why all the uproar about

If .xxx is created and I was a porn site I would be on it in a second. It would only make it easier for my members to find me and it will make blocking my site easier for concerned parents. Do you go to Kentucky Fried Chicken looking for a hamburger? No, you go to McDonalds. If I’m looking for porn and there is an area where that’s all I’ll find then I’m there.

alfred davenport says:

I think i will just make it easer for children to vew, if every porn site is .xxx, than the kids can just easaly type in .xxx on google and find all of them. Atleast now whith them on .com or .net there is a chance to keep them away from doing a quick google of the tag and gettin to the site. Anyway, if my kids were to be on a porn site i wouldent care, unless its my son on a gay porn site and vice verca for my doughter, and it saves a lot of awkward talks with them about sex. It would make a parents life easer to leave it the way it is.

TedO says:

Re: RE: Protect Our Kids = Bad Idea

everybody pay attention.

Mousky just did in 1 min, what our government couldn’t do in… oh never mind…

Protecting the kids is not a parents job. Helping them grow is. When will our lame a** society learn?

Same goes with violent games. Parents, if you dont want your kids to play them, dont buy it for them. And if they buy it, you’re the parent do something about it!

Everyone likes to b**ch, no one takes action.

James says:

Since when is nudity offensive? and why should children not witness a sexual act? I know some one who viewed his first pornographic video in third grade…he turned out fine. He now has a wife and kids and him having watched a sexual video in third grade does not bother him or disturb him in any way.

Hello! Sex is part of our nature!!! Look at all other animals, they have no problems walking around nude, and they certainly have no problems having sex in the middle of a public area!

My point is, if sex offends some one, this some one will stop viewing it. This means if your kid finds a sex video disgusting, he will stop viewing it. However, if the kid is entering puberty and is starting to be interested in the whole sex enviromnent, why stop him? To “protect him”? Protect him from what? How does viewing a pornographic video damage the child? Sex has no mental damage. Sex has been proved to be good in all aspects.

If you’re going to protect your child, protect him from violence, protect him from hate, protect him from abuse, protect him from propaganda, protect him from intimidation, hell!, protect him from what may actually damage him!!!

Ponder says:

I’m told russian p0rn is better produced thn American. How come my school blocks a search on an art gallery site for ‘nude’, but allows a google image search for ‘penis’? Do we take the rules of pornography from Muslim states, so that all sites picturing women in swimwear or short skirts will have to take .xxx domains? I say let the seperate countries do this to start with eg. .xxx.uk or .xxx.fr or .xxx.us and force all that country’s porn into that domain. This can be run as a trial scheme before deciding on a top level .xx domain.

alfred davenport says:

i tottaly aggre with James. My dad made 3 “mistakes” when he was rasein me. 1, put a lock on my door. 2, put a computer in that room with a lock. And 3 hook internet up to that computer in the locked room. My kids will have computer in there rooms, with internet, and locks. If they want to look at porn fine with me, as long as they know what they are doing, and they do it in the locked room on there computer, on there internet, as long as there not saveing any of it to the network i dont care. The only reason i would care about it being on the network is because i dont nead my computer dieing on me from some bug from the sites, but outher than that i wont care. Hell, I think that people shuld be protecting the kids from Bush, not porn, if they dont like looking at porn they wont look at it, plane and simple. Also if you tell a teen aged kid not to do something what is the first thing they do, unless its one of the perfect kids hat everyone in school hates, they go and do exatly what you told them not to do, so by blocking the sites they just want to see them more, its a fact of life. But thats just my point of vew

Call me Crazy . . . says:

Seriously, first the damn CPA and now this. When will our current administration get half a brain and acknowledge the fact that the United States Government (for all it’s worth . . . haha) cannot police the world. And sorry the internet is the world.

There is a simple solution to this . . . it’s called parenting. Get off your couch and take the cigarrette out of your mouth and talk to your kids about things like pornography. Kids are going to do what they want, all you can do is educate them. Stop expecting the government to protect your children.

susan stone says:

Who draws the line?

And what happens when they judge YOUR site to be porn?

XXX by choice is dandy.

XXX by fiat is censorship.

I do art. Is is Art or Xart? Who gets to decide?

We have a nation in which we can practically show a disembowelment to children. I avoid violence in my eyes. It hardens me. It might make me think that seeing violence does not matter.

It might make me think that some other nations have a point in seeing us as not sensitive to family or moral issues. (PS I see the Xtians as a major player in bringing violence to children’s minds and lives.)

I remember what “porn” was in 1950 or so. Remember the Playboy centerfolds then? Pink wasnt even thought of let alone tying up a person to make them unable to leave you when you get obnoxious.

But PISS CHRIST… now the “powers that be” would call that PORN. But HOLY ELEPHANT DUNG used in context on a picture? That was judged porn. Now a painting of Harold Washington with black skin and white bra and panties. That was removed from the halls of the Art Institute of Chicago student gallery.

BEWARE.

(please repeat that for each of the 8 x 2**8 chinese.)

Thanks for listening to my rant!

WhoNu says:

For those old enough to remember when all porn was called smut, and the only place to find it was on the magazine rack at the local drug store…Mostly it was arranged in alphabetical order, then someone came up with the idea to group all smut in its own section, usually at the end of the rack. The thinking was that for people looking for say Popular Science wouldn’t also have to see Popular Sex Stories. It was really great, now all the ‘good’ stuff was in one place and I could stand there in front of the Wild Wild West mags, grab a good smut just to my right, sticking it inside the Wild Wild West and browse forever.

Also does anyone realize that Lou Dobbs uses a walnut to open his car?

Alfred Davenport says:

Again, Ponder and Call me Crazy are right, the judges and lobbests think they, from there desk’s can controle how the world, i can see one of them in a few years goin “punk music with a anti-goverment theam is not safe for vewing on any type of media, and all of the records, and CDs shuld be removed from the shelfs and destroied.” Witch is pretty much what there doing now, one person isint happy with somethin so they have to change it so that the minority is happy, whail the majority is haveing a protest out side of the wite house, demanding that the first amendment be enforced and the people have the porn placed back on the internet so the mass amout of the people in the world can be somewhat happy with the way the world revolves

Anonymous Coward says:

.xxx by force

I dont think it will be an option although I am sure they would get to keep their .com address with autodirect.

I think it is a damn fine idea. For those people who dont choose to put a block on their PC than nothing has changed. For those that do want to filter porn it simplifes the issue.

I agree with the poster who said this can be done now but a .xxx extension is believed to be the needed catalyst to maket he message transferable.

And finally I would hope that they set a criteria like “sale of sexually explicit material” and not “breasts” otherwise this is a 1st ammendment nightmare

Anonymous Coward says:

Doomed to Fail

It’s too late for a .xxx domain. Back in 1993-1995 this would have worked. Today, no business is going to move it’s .com domain for which it paid big bucks to a .xxx domain that will be automatically blacklisted by every corporation, library, and school.

Merely creating the .xxx domain will not stop business from using .com domains. In order for .xxx to have impact, all of the following conditions must be met.

1. All nations must agree on an exact and unambiguis defintion of prn, even if their citizens do not agree with this defintion.

2. All nations must agree to force businesses to publish prn only on .xxx nodes. This must be actively enforced by prn police.

3. It must be illegal for business, libraries, governments, schools, coffe shops, etc. to block .xxx domains. All blocking must be an individual user’s choice. THIS IS CRTICIALLY IMPORTANT. If an organizaion in any way prevents a user from accessing those .xxx domain sites, then those sites will have a *major* incentive to disobey the law and no amount of enforcement will generate more cost than obeying the law.

Even if points 1 and 2 are done, which I doubt would ever happen, the .xxx domain is doomed to fail because governments will never, ever accept point 3. The whole intention of the government is to use .xxx to enforce their blacklisting. Government will never let the decisions be made by the individuals, so both user and web site provider will actively work to get around any blockade. In the end, the hundreds of millions of online prn consumers will prevail over the dozens of governments.

Start at the beginning

I have just had a crazy thought on all of this, why don’t they spend all their time worring about what the kids watch on TV and leave the internet alone.

Here in Aussie land it is illegal to buy, sell, rent or even own “xxx p0rn” so all we have left is the internet. Hell it is even now against the law to use kazaa down here.

Don’t end up like us, keep your internet free and keep the world open for everyone.

Mr Rat says:

Re: Start at the beginning

hey poetpete – thought I was the only Aussie that read this forum – I totally agree – tv violence – especially in cartoons and the news is much more damaging to kids than accidental access to porn; although with the recent ALP proposal to filter at the ISP level it will probably not be a concern for us soon – thats if they get elected – which is highly unlikey – I voted ALP at the last election but with shit IT policies like this looks like I’ll be doing a donkey vote next time.

Dale says:

Great Idea

This is a wonderful idea! I bet alot of the opposition is really Lobbiests for Web Content Filters. Moving to a .xxx domain would make it really easy to filter such content out.

We will never be able to control people or organizations from creating this content as it is their 1st ammendment right, so we must control it by making it manageable.

Jack G says:

this is ridiculous..

i believe that every measure a parent deems necissary to “protect” their offspring should be used. and if it takes the support of the “.xxx” domain, than so be it. blaming the current administration for this, when you later mention in your comment that the parents should be in control, is bone-headed and stupid. i believe that if we could get an educated discussion going on, instead of a name calling/ignorant forum, we could further this issue. if you are going to argue something, dont contradict, or mis-spell. stick to your morals, and beliefs. im for the .xxx domain, proving that it would be easier to find only further proves the effectiveness of this solution. the easier it is to find, the easier it is to detect this problem, and then prevent it in the future. most of the comments have lost sight on the fact we are talking about children, not adults. if you think this will harm your own personal searching, and thats what your arguing about, take a look at the big picture, a kid NOT exposed to this situation would be more likely to stay away from sexual behavior and pre-marital sex. someone that is exposed, and their parents APPROVE of this behavior, will be more likely to justify immoral and illegal things later in life. i believe we should protect our children from these things, enforce morals, and pass the .xxx

glenn says:

.xxx

If the ICANN put all adult content on a .xxx domain. It would make it simple to protect children. Just block *.xxx… The fear of legitimising an online red light district is just silly. There are already more porn sites then you could shake a stick at. Without hard numbers i would be willing to say that the amount of pornographic material accounts for more server space then non-pornographic material.

That leaves us with two choices continue allowing confusing redirects to slap it in our face. Or separate it so you know what your getting into before hand. Like it or hate it “adult” content is a very profitable business and as long as it remains that way we will see more porn not less.

As for the adult sires hosted in foreign country’s debate. 90% of the Internet is hosted from servers located in the USA. its not a we’re better then you thing its a we invented it thing. So enforcing the move would be rather simple. The ICANN could also wrap some sort of PKI or global account information verify you were in fact 18. Making it simpler for responsible adults to browse such content while still quarantine it from those not yet ready for it. I am a child of the net… I grew up with it… When i was 10 i was watching MTV and trading dirty pics, but by the time i was 13 i had mastered it and knew how to manipulate the net to get all the porn i wanted. In hind site this wasn’t cool, and I wasn’t old enough for what i encountered. Quite frankly I’m still not old enough for some of the stuff out there. We need to realise its not all BJ and dumb blonde’s. There is some seriously messed up stuff out there. Stuff that makes me sick to my stomach.

I CRINGE at the thought of a kid having to face that stuff!

my 2 cents…

90% of Internet content is NOT hosted in the US, the USA is NOT the largest continent, it is NOT the Richest Country, it is NOT the Be all and End All, The US has Hollywood…thats it ok. sheesh, the ignorance of some ppl, travel beyond your borders please, the EARTH does not wear the US flag. the US is PART of the world, it is NOT the World. .xxx is a great idea, but once again it is US Law, bring it to the UN, get it thru the Worlc Committee, unless of course the US government thinks it can muscle the rest of the world, here’s prediction, 20 yrs ago Japan was seen as a hobo country producing cheap unreliable items… Long gone are those days, now adays, smart ppl will take Japan goods over US goods anytime.

scene today, China is seen as cheap and unrealiable goods…China has 3 billion people, prepare for the shift in power. but look at the controls they have in place. Total ban on outside traffic, except to the tech savvy. The western population is aging, the demographics shows it, you marketeers know it, the Asian market is young and booming…ths shift is coming, be ready for it. 65 yr olds in Congress…not a future planner.

God, why are people so uptight about this? Animals have sex all the time. As long as the kid isnt having it with anyone without protection whats the problem?

In other countries, sex is seen as part of nature, but here, noooo! Even a pair of breasts are seen as the spawn of satan. EVERY WOMAN HAS BREASTS. And its not like they’ll NEVER see that in their lives. Jesus Christ, what are we, Sexophobics?

If your kids ask you about, tell them. If they don’t, don’t. If it’s against your religion, explain it to them Children are not THAT DUMB. If you arent religious, then why is everyone so scared of it?

You dont have to change all the site’s names to .xxx just because a few people can’t sit down with their children and talk like human beings, let alone PARENTS.

this thread turned the wrong way it appears. back to the EFFECTS THIS HAS ON TECHNOLOGY and not everyone’s self-righteous views: this is hitting back to what MYarms started with earlier. this gives the UN more ammo for moving ICAAN under their control. if we don’t get it together and remove the government from the free market, we may as well let big brother tell us how to implement CSS 2.0 and solve the IE vs the rest of the browser debate. i view this as a bad thing and the only way to save face is for the gov’t to shut up about it and for ICAAN to make up some BS about it was waiting for opinions, waiting till friday, anything!

Ben McNelly (user link) says:

Bottom line, you cant fix it. Its broke...

You wanna know what this is about? Its about Money, as always. That’s right money. Think I am wrong? Off my rocker? Hear me out…

#1 – we cant make sites (and never will) move to the .xxx domain. There will always be porn sites on .com/org/net/us/insert_anything_that_is_purchasable_here…

#2 – Porn industry is not as big as they make it seem, but there’s always room for growth. Growth that’s partially hampered by the stigma of putting crap out on the .com/net whatever sites. .xxx, would just make it that much easier / available to make and market sites.

#3 – Yes .xxx would legitimize porn. Not that its not legitimate now, just that it becomes more of a cultural norm. Why just the other day I saw a porn site, and yep those were legitimate boobies. That’s not what I mean. It makes porn mainstream/more acceptable and the fact is its not. Its not ethical, its not healthy, its degrading…

4# – We cant escape the fact though that there are more people addicted to porn than ever. These people need/want their fix. If you want its there, easy to find, easy to hide… There is sooo much more money to be made here. THATS why we “need” .xxx

5# – You think my space is bad now… Wait till your kid can start sallyswebcam.xxx and nobody will know. (except daddy of course, cuz he cant stop jerking off…) People get down on parents because they don’t know how to parent. OK fair enough, but remember these “parents” are the illiterate generation. Just enough to know the internet is evil, but stupid enough to pay for their porn.

6# – The people who lobby for this as “protection” are morons. IF YOU WANT PORN, YOU CAN GET IT… If you spent more time changing the way culture portrays sexuality to young people you would make a difference. This is the condom approach to the internet.

– “Well we taught them in school, news, movies and music that there are no absolutes, do what feels good, you are free to behave anyway you want sexually… just use these condoms and take this morning after pills…

– Oh my look over here, this porn thing is getting out of hand! Give em more condoms! “uh, that doesn’t work on computers..” Well, then filter it somehow!…

—————-

Bottom line, you cant fix it. Its broke. We are all broken.

There’s only one answer to this problem. And .xxx isn’t even close…

Ben says:

Re: we do it everywhere else .. why not the intern

No sorry, the internet is not an acurate reflectoin of real life. There are issues that just are different. Take youself for example. You may be a pimple nosed little twerp, who was annoyed for years cuz you couldent reach the porno shelf. – Thats meerly inacurate speculation I’m sure, but you get the point. In real life you have to deal with being a little twerp no body cares about, but you have a completely diferent life on the intenet…

The reason its top shelved is because kids go walking around video stores. You have to go looking for it, to find it. Its not hard, but our society is filled with money grubbing people who care more about income than morals, and these people own movie stores… But its just supply and demand realy.

Same thing on internet allready. You have to be a moron who begs for adware/spyware OR be LOOKING for porn, to find it. YES you do accidentaly stumble upon it, but its not realy that prevalent.

SO, internet is allready top shelved enough. Your a SAP if you think a .xxx domain will “fix” anything. The only thing this is about is ca$h…

I have said it before, and I will say it again…

If you WANT to find it you WILL.

“just assign them the .xxx & be done with it”

– You cant make .xxx work, there are too many holes in it for it to be a good filter. Its not meant to be a filter though. Its meant so people can cash in on $60 a domain for them and so we can all say, SEE!!! We did somthing about this nasty stuff!!!

– I think I will puke the fist time I see one of those google ads for a .xxx domain…

me says:

heh

sure, the US pretty much own ICANN, a so-called “world” governing body… fortunately, the big picture is that America is going to implode, economically that is, in the next few decades… heh, it has already imploded socially, so its time as a world power is coming to an end… not fast enough, mind you… but it will be a pleasure to watch.

umm, ok, that went slightly off topic.. but the point is that .xxx will happen, just not quite yet. give it another year.

Jack G says:

i cant believe its come to this....

this is ridiculous… to compare animal sexual behavior to explicit human sexual activity(soft or hard core pornography) is incredibly absent minded. yes sex is a natural thing, but do we take pictures of animal sex and post it on the internet? if your going to apply that argument, check the facts, do the animals have a sense of right and wrong? no. i think not. they are born to reproduce, they dont have sense to wear clothing or hide their reproductive organs. humans have the sense to do these things. if it werent explicit behavior than there would not be laws against under-age pornography. if it were completely natural, than Jesus would not have worn clothes, and the bible would have been a kama sutra more than a guidline for life. if you dont want to bring religion into the forum, do not use Jesus Christ, and God, as if you were using the bible for your answer, refer to the story of abraham and his sons, when he was drunk and naked, one of the sons, ham i believe, covered him with the robe, because it is stated that NUDITY is not pure, while sham just laughed at the sight of his father, he was later scolded, and there are some other beliefs that go along with Shams story, and i know the comment of the whole religion argument will come up, and if it is, the very person arguing is the one who brought up religion in the first place. our country is built on morals, ethics, and Christian values, and this bill should not be excluded from this traditional way of governing our great nation.

Charlie Brown says:

.XXX domains

It’s like this, as far as I have read, there are a few poins, to comment.

1) Unlike some people think, the world is not only the US, but also other countries too (Like my one, Portugal), so the US can’t enforce their laws in other countries… (This is why, it’s very hard to stop piracy…)

2) Do you really think, that all websites wil move to an .xxx domain? Some may, but others may not, because their will be filtered on many places, like companies, lan houses, etc.

3) The ideia of what is porn and what isn’t differs from country to country, in some countries an womam showing her face is bad, while in others people walking naked on an beach is perfectly normal…

4) If I have kids, particullary on the portuguese scenary where six year kids, actually know how to speech french, english, making money conversies, etc., I would not like them to be like nerds, or something like that, so that when left in the street they be unsafe, without knowing what’s bad or good, and porn sites are one way to teach that (At least until the teaching sex in schools law is approved..)

5) Now an economical reason, many companies that produce web filters and porn content, would be out of the industry, and I don’t see any government going against their wil (because their have the economical means, on their side…)

In short, this is an big affair, just like some others related to it, some countries easy approve it, while others don’t. And there wil always someone out there trying to break it

Bobbabudobaloo says:

geeze...

i mean its a good idea and all but cant they just leave things alone?

if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.

the U.S. should just nix all of the stupid things that make the majority of Americans mad and leave it be for the next 200 years.

all of this crazy stuff is unnecessary and just stresses people out. everything is going just fine right now. sure there are problems but all in all life is good, so stop tweaking stupid little things that need not be tweaked.

a kid could just get any p2p program or bittorrent host like azureus and p0rn it up anyways, so the blocking is irrelevant.

as far as making it easier to find……isnt it easy enough? how lazy can ya get, geeze! 😛
