UN Backs Down On Attempt To Manage Internet Details

from the hello-status-quo dept

We haven’t written much about the struggle between the US and the UN over who got to control ICANN and set basic policy concerning how the internet functions. For the most part, both sides were making statements that were overhyped and misleading. However, for the time being, there’s nothing much to worry about either way, as the two sides have come to an agreement, which is basically to leave things as they are. The US Department of Commerce will continue to oversee ICANN, who will continue to be ineffective, but now, they’ll actually try to listen to foreign suggestions before proceeding to muck things up, as per usual.
