American Express: Leaving Home With Someone Else's Credit Card

Dave Farber’s Interesting People list has an anonymous story about an American Express screwup. The writer noticed that his or her AmEx card was about to expire and a new one had not been delivered. American Express explained that the card had been sent, but it had been returned for some unknown reason, and promised to overnight the card — which they did. Unfortunately, in the package American Express also included 34 other ready-to-go American Express cards for other people that had also been returned when sent. Mistakes happen — and even though that’s a pretty big one for a credit card company — what’s worse is how the company responded when told about it. Basically, they didn’t respond. They promised to call the person back, but never did and no one seems particularly concerned that 34 American Express cards that don’t require authorization were delivered to someone they don’t belong to.

Sure, chop them up, forget about it, and get ripped off on the off chance it happens again to his own card (although Amex should be aware of the identity of the culprit, but still a pain).

Or, realize that others may be less moral than himself and raise enough of a stink that it hopefully might have some effect of reducing the chance of it happening again.

I don’t really see the problem. Either choice is viable depending on your personal concerns.

Like others have already said you should keep these comments to yourself. Racism is not something accepted in these forums. I hate censorship but this kind of thing should not be posted anywhere ever for any reason. Now back to the topic at hand. I agree completely this guy has too much time on his hands. yes it was a huge screw up on AMEX’s part but as they say shit happens. I also love that the guy didn’t want to waste time clipping cards but would waste days righting e-mails and making phone calls.

HOW DARE YOU???? You work for an AMERICAN COMPANY and you call US DUMB??? You have a job that an AMERICAN should have!!!
It has NOTHING to do with race, it has to do with losing our jobs to people overseas, who quite frankly, even if they DO know what they are talking about – WE CAN BARELY UNDERSTAND YOU! MOST ARE HARDLY PROFICIENT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE! The ONLY “dumb Americans” are the ones who gave YOU your job. I don’t care how ‘smart’ you THINK you are, with comments like you made, you only appear to be a SMART ASS to me. You should be more grateful for having a job that rightfully belongs to another person!
Oh and by the way – DO NOT delude yourself into thinking you have your “Amex job as an outsource” because you give smarter answers than the “people in the US”. YOU ONLY HAVE YOUR JOB BECAUSE YOU ARE WILLING TO WORK FOR LESS MONEY!
