American Express: Leaving Home With Someone Else's Credit Card

Dave Farber’s Interesting People list has an anonymous story about an American Express screwup. The writer noticed that his or her AmEx card was about to expire and a new one had not been delivered. American Express explained that the card had been sent, but it had been returned for some unknown reason, and promised to overnight the card — which they did. Unfortunately, in the package American Express also included 34 other ready-to-go American Express cards for other people that had also been returned when sent. Mistakes happen — and even though that’s a pretty big one for a credit card company — what’s worse is how the company responded when told about it. Basically, they didn’t respond. They promised to call the person back, but never did and no one seems particularly concerned that 34 American Express cards that don’t require authorization were delivered to someone they don’t belong to.

Didn’t they outsource a lot of their operations? Always wondered if that kind of outsourcing is a sign of trouble. Just a thought.

The posting isn’t anonymous. Amex did tell him what to do with the cards – chop them up and forget about it. Fair enough. They’ve probably already issued replacement cards. Some people have too much time on their hands.

Too busy to take an hour to chop them up, but he will take the time to write e-mails, and then send letters to all the people. Too much time on his hands and desperately in need of attention.

Sure, chop them up, forget about it, and get ripped off on the off chance it happens again to his own card (although Amex should be aware of the identity of the culprit, but still a pain).
Or, realize that others may be less moral than himself and raise enough of a stink that it hopefully might have some effect of reducing the chance of it happening again.
I don’t really see the problem. Either choice is viable depending on your personal concerns.

I got somebody else’s VISA card, along with my own once. I just cut it half and threw it away – didn’t even bother to call VISA.

Like others have already said you should keep these comments to yourself. Racism is not something accepted in these forums. I hate censorship but this kind of thing should not be posted anywhere ever for any reason. Now back to the topic at hand. I agree completely this guy has too much time on his hands. yes it was a huge screw up on AMEX’s part but as they say shit happens. I also love that the guy didn’t want to waste time clipping cards but would waste days righting e-mails and making phone calls.

I just received my new AmEx for one which expires today, and it did require activation. The old card, and last 4 digits of my SSN were the main requirements for activation.
