How Apple Is Getting Publicity For Its Non-Sponsorship Of The Olympics

from the quick,-call-the-olympic-committee dept

Quick! Someone call the the International Olympic Committee! Someone is getting publicity from the Olympics without paying for official sponsorship! We’ve covered the ridiculous extremes of the Olympic Committee in the past — including banning anyone from wearing clothes that showed the brand of a sponsor’s rival and having special rules about how anyone can mention the Olympics, lest anyone think a non-sponsor was officially associated with the event. However, the Baltimore Sun is reporting how Apple has received a ton of free publicity for the iPod, as a number of athletes (snowboarders, especially) have been seen listening to iPods while competing, with some even saying what they were listening to at the time. Considering the Olympic Committee once told athletes they weren’t allowed to blog about their experiences, how long until they tell them they can’t use iPods either… unless, of course, Apple pays up for a sponsorship slot?

Re: Re: Re:2 No Subject Given

the olympic committee can ask them to do whatever they like while they’re on television or under contract with them. NBC pays for the rights to host the olympics, but does not recieve the advertising revenue related to the in-program stuff. They only recieve revenue for their aired commercial advertisements.

It is wise for the olympic committee to close out nonpaying companies who are recieve advertisement value, since they would otherwise be discouraging that company and competitor companies from providing sponsorships. Sponsorships generally include free products for athletes, as well, which is not too shabby of a deal.
