You Sue Me, I Sue You

Qualcomm’s responded to an antitrust complaint filed by six companies by firing back with a lawsuit of its own against one of them, alleging Nokia is infringing a dozen of its patents in GSM products. It’s not the first time Qualcomm has responded this way: after being hit with an antitrust lawsuit in the US filed by Broadcom back in July (and another patent suit in May), Qualcomm turned around and sued Broadcom right back. The Broadcom and Nokia suits share six patents in common, and this sort of tit-for-tat lawsuit filing isn’t uncommon in patent disputes, but the timing and target of the suit make it hard not to think this might be a little more than that, and it does little to dissuade some of the negative feelings swirling around the company.
