O2 Gets In Trouble For SMSpamming
Over in the UK, O2 has been told they need to stop SMS spamming their subscribers. More specifically, they’ve been told they need to provide an “opt-out” option when they do spam them. This seems like an obvious thing to do, but O2 still decided to fight it. In fact, they claim that since the fine print of their service contracts that no one reads (and which are unlikely to be negotiable) states that users consent to “electronic marketing communications,” there’s simply no reason to provide an opt-out mechanism. Besides using this somewhat ridiculous defense, this is an incredibly subscriber-unfriendly position. The company is basically saying they don’t care that you’re a paying customer who would prefer not to be bothered — they’re going to spam you whether you like it or not.
