A $55,000 Net Scam Warning

from the ouch dept

A followup to a story we posted last month about fake escrow sites tells the story of a guy who thought he bought a $55,000 car online, only to lose that money to a fake escrow site. The article points out that the guy is no fool. He talked to someone in the FBI first to make sure it sounded okay, and he even refused to use the first escrow site the seller suggested, since it seemed too sketchy for him. However, the second site looked very legitimate, and the guy fell for it. The lesson, it seems, is that if you’re buying a big ticket item, make sure you use a verified escrow service.
