Atom-Level Memory

from the who-says-no-one's-working-on-far-out-stuff dept

dsg writes “Physicists have developed a memory that stores information by detecting the presence or absence of a single silicon atom. The device has a storage density of 250Tbit/sq in. and is stable at room temperature. On the downside, r/w access is slow. They are working on boosting the speed by 100,000 times (but they never tell us how fast it currently is, so who knows what 100,000 times faster means). Additionally, Prof Himpsel notes that as the density of data increase, the speed decreases.”
