Apparently, Network Solutions received so many requests when they offered people the chance to request a new .biz or .info domain name that they had problems processing them all and had to email everyone to try again if they had any problems. Some people, including the company managing the .info registry, say that .com has become synonymous with failure, encouraging groups and individuals to line up for non-dot-com names. Will three letters really make or break your business? If that’s what you’re banking on, I suppose it could. “

Interesting how .name or the others weren’t offered for notification. There’s probably a partial reason for this, .info is partially owned by networks solutions (but I’m not sure about .biz).

The salon article looks a little like overhype. You can’t associate any TLD with success or failure right now because there aren’t any big commercial successes that started out with non-.com TLDs. Furthermore, it doesn’t take a genius to see that the online marketplace for anything mainstream remains super-saturated.
