re--Backblaze backup software
External storage devices can be quite a bitch when dealing with automated backup software, as some drives will trigger the auto-backup feature and some won’t. Actually, it’s probably best if none of them ever did, since the simple act of swapping out external drives can make for a huge amount of wasted disk or cloud space, as the backup software may view a swapped external drive as a massive file addition or deletion. Last Thursday’s Techdirt Deal featured “Backblaze Unlimited Backup” software, in which Gretchen Heckmann wrote, “Backblaze allows you to backup your computer and any external drives you have plugged in. ” Reading some of the reviews, it seemed one of the loudest and most frequent complaints about Backblaze was its treatment of external drives, while completely locking out the user of any configuration choices or settings overrides.
So how would these particular external drives be treated on a computer running Backblaze? For instance, would the 128GB Solid-State Portable Hard Drive automatically trip the backup feature, but not either of the 32GB or 64GB ‘flash’ drives?
And on a sidenote, can an external HDD be spoofed to appear as a flash drive (which often gets ignored by backup software) in order to fool the auto-backup software?

After seeing so much (unspecified) hate and vitriol spewed here in short order, I assumed the backlash was due to Monster Cable’s infamously deceptive marketing practices (one of my pet peeves).
But maybe Techdirt readers instead have memories about Masnick & Co.’s long history writing about Monster’s frequent and flagrant abuses of IP law and reliance on corporate-bullying-as-a-business-model.
